Sound file formats
Uncompressed:
- WAV is a file extension for an audio file format created by Microsoft. The wav file has become a standard PC audio file format for everything from system
- AIFF The format was developed by Apple Inc. in 1988 based on Electronic Arts' Interchange File Format (IFF, widely used on Amiga systems)
- AU Astronomers use astronomical units or AU to describe solar system distances. Definition of AU here. Also, mean distances in AU to prominent solar system objects.
- SMP is the processing of programs by multiple processors that share a common operating system and memory.
- VOC The first 19 bytes in this format is "Creative Voice File". There is another audio file format with the .voc file extension
- it is used for games on PC or consoles as they have biger hard dirves.
Lossy compression:
- MP3 a means of compressing a sound sequence into a very small file, to enable digital storage and transmission
- RA Real Audio is a proprietary audio format developed by Real Networks and first released in April 1995. It uses a variety of audio codecs, ranging from low-bit rate formats that can be used over dial up modems, to high-fidelity formats for music.
- VOX Dialogic ADPCM or VOX is an audio file format, optimised for storing digitise voice data at a low sampling rate.Similar to other ADP (Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation) formats.
- it is used for games on small devices like phones or DS.

In digital audio using pulse-code modulation (PCM), bit depth is the number of bits of information in each sample, and it directly corresponds to the resolution of each sample. Examples of bit depth include Compact Disc Digital Audio, which uses 16 bits per sample, and DVD-Audio and Blu-ray Disc which can support up to 24 bits per sample.
Resolution + Image Size + Bit Depth + Color Mode = File Size
- Sample rate is the number of samples of audio carried per second.
- Mono it is used to record one the sound from one area.
- Stereo sound that is directed through two or more speakers so that it seems to surround the listener and to come from more than one source; stereophonic sound.
- Surround it is sounds that you can her from all sides and you cant tell were it is coming from if you are blindfolded.
- DSP – Digital Signal Processor
Is a type of specialised microprocess or which has the feature for digital signal processing in auiae fast time. It is very good for applicatians to process in auick time and overcome delays.
- RAM – Random Access Memory
It is how much space you have when your PC is on and but when you ten it off the ram clears its self of all the info and things you did unless you save it to the hard drive or memory stick.
- File format (eg Mp3, Wav, Aiff)
This type of file is more compressed so it is not there good for games on PC and console for this you need a bigger file format.
- Audio output (eg Mono, Stereo, Surround).
depending on how you are woching the film/ play game and how you have the sound is being played for gaming and woaching films surround sound is the best but with others it loses quo lite as you cant tell were it is coming from.
- PCM – Pulse Code Modulation
pulse code modulation is a feature which is used to convert analogy to digital signal, which then can be transferred to a digital communication tool thereafter med back to its analogy signal it has 3 steps to go through sampling auantization and coding.
